Dr. Ed Becker passed away on May 13, 2008 at the age of 85.  He was a research scientist at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada from 1952-1980 working as a taxonomist at the Canadian National Collection of Insects, Arachnids and Nematodes (CNC) in Ottawa.  His area of expertise was the systematics of click beetles (Coleoptera: Elateridae), which include many Canadian crop pest species.  During his life, he published 36 scientific articles, book chapters and reviews.  Following retirement, he became an Honorary Research Associate and continued to come into work nearly every day for the past 28 years. 

In addition to Ed’s scientific work, he was active in many entomological societies and organizations, working as treasurer of the Entomological Society of Canada (1961-1985), Section A representative for the Entomological Society of America (1982-1984), Editor of the Coleopterist’s Bulletin (1983-1990) and President of the Coleopterist’s Society (1971-1972).  Perhaps his biggest contribution to entomology was through the CanaColl Foundation, a non-profit organization that Ed helped create and almost single-handedly nurtured for the past 36 years.  The foundation promotes taxonomic research at CNC by providing funds to visiting entomologists who curate the collection.  The Foundation currently has investments of $475,000 and has awarded over $200,000 in grants to nearly 300 researchers.  Ed was recognized for his work by receiving the Queen’s Silver Jubilee Medal (1978), the Canada Commemorative Award (1984) and was made a Fellow of the Entomological Society of Canada (1974) and an Honorary Member of the Entomological Society of America (1997).  His tireless efforts to promote entomology and CNC have had far-reaching effects not only in Canada, but throughout the world.  Ed’s cheerful, positive attitude, sense of humour and love of bowties will be sadly missed.

M. Ed Becker (Ph.D.) est décédé le 13 mai 2008 à l’âge de 85 ans. Il a travaillé dans le secteur de la recherche scientifique à Agriculture et Agroalimentaire Canada de 1952 à 1980, soit en qualité de taxonomiste de la Collection nationale canadienne d’insectes, d’arachnides et de nématodes (CNC) à Ottawa. Son domaine d’expertise était la systématique des taupins (coléoptères : Élatéridés), un groupe d’insectes qui comprend de nombreuses espèces ravageuses des cultures canadiennes. Au cours de sa vie, M. Becker a publié 36 articles, chapitres d’ouvrages et revues scientifiques. Une fois à la retraite, il est devenu associé de recherche honoraire et il a continué de travailler à temps plein ou presque pendant une période de 28 ans.

Outre ses travaux scientifiques, il a été actif au sein d’un grand nombre de sociétés et d’organismes d’entomologie. Il a notamment été trésorier de la Société d’entomologie du Canada  (1961 à 1985), représentant de la Section A de la Société d'entomologie de l'Amérique  (1982 à 1984), rédacteur en chef du Bulletin des coléoptèristes  (1983 à 1990) et président de la  Société des coléoptèristes (1971 et 1972). Sa contribution la plus importante à l’entomologie a sans doute été la Fondation CanaColl, un organisme sans but lucratif qu’il a aidé à créer et qu’il a soutenu pratiquement à lui seul au cours des 36 dernières années. La Fondation CanaColl fait la promotion de la recherche taxonomique liée à la CNC en offrant une aide financière aux entomologistes invités qui entretiennent la collection. La Fondation compte actuellement des investissements de 475 000 $ et a versé plus de 200 000 $ en subventions à près de 300 chercheurs. À titre de reconnaissance pour ses travaux, M. Becker a reçu la Médaille commémorative du règne de la Reine (1978), le Prix commémoratif du Canada (1984) et les titres de Membre de la Société d’entomologie du Canada (1974) et de Membre honoraire de la Société d'entomologie de l'Amérique (1997). Ses efforts inlassables de promotion de l’entomologie et de la CNC se sont fait sentir non seulement au Canada mais partout dans le monde. Sa jovialité, son attitude positive, son sens de l’humour et son engouement pour les noeuds papillons resteront gravés dans notre mémoire.
