Position Title

    Entomology Research Technician

Role

    Assisting Dr. Gibson's research on Chalcidoidea.

Current Projects

  • Databasing, photographing and creating distribution maps for a New World revision of the genus Spalangia Latreille (Pteromalidae).
  • Capturing scanning electron micrographs of various chalcid taxa.

Expertise

  • Photography of insects using high resolution digital cameras mounted on microscopes and processing using software such as Auto-Montage 5.02 and Adobe Photoshop CS3.
  • Identification of most insect orders, and many common families of wasps, flies and beetles
  • Mounting, labelling and databasing insects
  • Operating a Philips scanning electron microscope in environmental and hi-vac modes.
  • Insect Molecular Systematics techniques including extraction of DNA from insect tissue, PCR, Gel Electrophoresis, DNA Purification from solution and from agar gel. Also proficient in contig assembly using Sequencher software.
  • Web design & maintenance using Dreamweaver software
