MISCELLANEOUS INSECT ORDERS

by R.E. Skidmore

Introduction

The smaller insect orders in the Canadian National Collection are organized into the miscellaneous terrestrial orders and the miscellaneous aquatic orders.

For information on the Thysanoptera (2160 alcohol vials, 900 slides, 21 primary types) contact R.G. Foottit. For all other orders, contact O. Lonsdale.

The Miscellaneous Aquatic Orders

The aquatic orders include the Ephemeroptera, Odonata, Plecoptera and Trichoptera. The miscellaneous aquatic orders consist of 885 drawers and 83000 vials of which almost 60% are completely curated.

The Miscellaneous Terrestrial Orders

The terrestrial orders in the CNC include the following groups: Orthoptera, Neuroptera, Siphonaptera, Collembola, Psocoptera, Anoplura, Mallophaga, Mecoptera, Thysanura, Diplura, Embioptera, Zoraptera and Canadian amber specimens.

The Orthoptera collection is contained in over 450 drawers of pinned specimens and over 1200 vials of alcohol specimens. The pinned specimen are about 85% identified to species level while the alcohol material is approximately 60% identified. Also included is a synoptic collection of Acridid grasshoppers in pairs, from the Peoples Republic of China as well as approximately 60 specimens from Japan. Eight primary types are represented in this collection.

The Collembola collection consists of approximately 2000 slides of identified material and 500 slides of undetermined species. The collection contains 35 slides of primary types.

The Mallophaga collection contains approximately 800 slides, and almost 150 vials of material. This collection includes holotypes and allotypes of two species.

The Mecoptera is contained in 7 drawers and includes holotypes and allotypes of two species.

The Neuropteroidea collection is housed in 55 drawers and also contains approximately 650 alcohol vials. This collection is basically 60% identified to species level and contains 13 primary types. The following groups are represented: Mantispidae (2 drawers), Rhaphidioptera (3 drawers), Coniopterigidae (1 drawer), Chrysopidae (11 drawers), Hemerobiidae (9 drawers), Ascalaphidae (3 drawers), Myrmeleontidae (7 drawers), Corydalidae (7 drawers), Sialidae (2 drawers), miscellaneous unsorted ( 3 drawers). The Megaloptera portion also contains a holotype and allotype of one species.

The Siphonaptera collection is represented by approximately 40,000 slides and 100 alcohol vials. The collection consists of 41 primary types.
