NEMATODA (ROUNDWORMS)

The Canadian National Collection of Nematodes (CNCN), one of the oldest of its kind in North America, was started by Dr. A.D. Baker in 1943. It was developed and maintained by nematologists of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) as part of their systematic programs and is the primary repository in Canada for all nematodes except the human and animal parasites. It is housed in the K.W. Neatby Building of AAFC in Ottawa.

It is comprised of a type collection, a general slide and vial collection, and a voucher collection established to meet Canadian needs. Taxa are listed alphabetically by species, and include 4,990 primary and secondary types of 396 species. Most were collected and described from Canadian localities; types of 130 species were generously donated by individuals from other countries. Composition of the collection by group is as follows: plant-parasitic (54%), marine and freshwater (31%), terrestrial free-living (11 %), and entomophagous (4%). The general collection now has in excess of 29,000 slide mounts of 88,000 specimens and 5,000 vials of mixed nematodes collected from all major regions of Canada, including the Yukon, Northwest Territories, and the High Arctic. More than 500 named species in 250 genera and 85 families are represented.

Since Dr. R. Anderson?s retirement in 1995, CNCN went through a ?dormant stage? until 2006. With the appointment of Dr. Qing Yu, as a nematode systematist with AAFC, and curator for the collection, CNCN is now active again and prepared to be the repository in Canada for nematode specimens.
